Demos
Over the course of the day we’ll be hearing from 20+ entrepreneurs, developers and academics with exciting new projects to demo. Some will be works-in-progress, others will be up and running and we’re even expecting see a few official launches. If you’d like to apply to demo at SHOWCASE, you’ll find more info here.
Demos will be running throughout the day in the main room - so if the technical workshops aren’t your thing just pull up your seat and get comfy.
The current lineup includes:
Marty Neill: Owner, No More Art / CEO AirPOS Ltd
AirPOS is one of the hottest startups to come out of NI in the last year. CEO and co-founder Marty Neill will talk about how AirPOS has attracted the interest of web giants such as PayPal and Adobe with investors eyeing it up as a potential global player in the ePOS market.
The solution is developed on Adobe AIR to maximize the reach to the widest range of ePOS platforms and devices, whilst at the same time minimizing R&D costs, and is delivered via the cloud, giving world-class system availability and operations excellence to AirPOS customers.
Edward Hendrick: Founder, Sonru
Sonru is an award winning video technology company based in the South East of Ireland. The name Sonru stems from the Irish phrase “Bí le sonrú” which means to “stand out” and their flagship product – the automated video interview tool enables interviewees to do just that. Their automated video interview tool has applications within the Recruitment, Education, Training and CRM sectors.
Sonru was founded by Edward Hendrick, an Irish entrepreneur who spotted an opportunity to save people time and money during the interview process. He believes Sonru will disrupt the established methodology of performing interviews and it is Sonru’s vision that all first round screening interviews will be conducted using automated video interview tools. Sonru is a high potential client of Enterprise Ireland and is listed as one of the world’s top 100 technology start-ups in 2010.
Rosemary McClenaghan: Taxizapp
Taxizapp is a website and smartphone GPS application to provide an innovative, fun and easy way to ‘hail’ taxis. Using a digital mapping system, passengers can locate any available taxis in their immediate vicinity, electronically ‘hail’ the nearest or a preferred taxi and if accepted by the driver, watch as the taxi approaches.
Robert Martin: Co-Owner and CEO, Infacta
Infacta (Sligo) has been developing award-winning software and services since 1998. Their GroupMail software is used in over 160 countries around the world and available in four languages. Automattic (WordPress) acquired Infacta’s PollDaddy service in 2008.
Their latest project, Miximo (www.miximo.com) will be launching soon and is already gathering a lot of interest. Miximo is a membership management system for clubs, schools, universities, businesses, non-profit organizations and sports teams. We’re delighted to have them present the first public demo of Miximo at SHOWCASE.
Barry Henderson: Clearway Medical
An over-reliance on mouth breathing is implicated in the development and progression of a range of respiratory disorders e.g. Asthma, COPD, exercise induced asthma as well as sub-optimal sporting performance.
The Clearscope Respiratory Training System is a device and related software capable of measuring, analysing and providing feedback on respiratory function in order that the end-users can optimise breathing performance, more specifically to increase their nose:mouth breathing ratio.
Mel Byrne: Lead Project Manager - HeartPhone
HeartPhone is a connected healthcare solution which measures, monitors and manages the weight of congestive heart failure patients in the home. This year the HeartPhone team were proud to receive the award for Product Innovation of the Year at the Aramark Healthcare Innovation Awards.
David Knowles: Instructional Designer - MobiMaths
MobiMaths facilitates innovative mathematics teaching, harnessing the unique power of smartphones to provide engaging, significant learning opportunities for students. MobiMaths will deliver an integrated system comprising a server and middleware architecture, a set of collaborative, context-based problem solving activities for smartphones, and a pedagogical framework with clear links to the US K-12 curriculum.
Kevin Smith: Research Leader - HayStack
Haystack provides a medical training simulator for training and qualified anaesthetists that utilises Hierarchical Task Analysis procedural data, virtual anatomical models, and interactive haptic devices to train and assess performance of Ultrasound guided Peripheral Nerve Block for Axillary Brachial Plexus Block.
Ronan Byrne: Haunted Planet Studios
Following on from two years research and development at NDRC (National Digital Research Centre), project Viking Ghost Hunt has evolved into a new spin out - Haunted Planet Studios (HPS). HPS is currently creating a range of location aware mobile games with augmented reality for major visitor attractions.
Matt Johnston: Digital Circle - Code4Pizza
“Code4Pizza is a nonprofit idea to encourage young techies to build their own careers by providing computers, mentoring, internet access, learning materials and pizza.” One of the key projects so far has been using bus and rail data from Translink to create some useful applications for the public good. Matt’s going to give us a peek.
Jason Bell: Founder, DataSentiment
DataSentiment provides a suite of customer loyalty solutions for the retail sector. The UVoucher system provides each retailer with their own loyalty system, customer management system and mobile application that can engage, encourage and monitor incremental revenue and brand loyalty. The system is totally location aware and built on a scalable cloud structure that can be expanded or reduced depending on retailer and consumer demand.
In addition to UVoucher DataSentiment has developed StamperCard, the mobile version of the traditional stamp based loyalty scheme, and QRVoucher which enables anyone to create 2D barcodes will analytic tracking features.
Richard Dale: Planzai
Planzai is a web app aimed initially at the music industry, which intends to make musicians’ lives easier. Planzai helps them achieve their business goals by providing expert content, broken down step-by-step. Each step becomes a task in the user’s calender, and our content helps them understand the ‘how, when and who’ of achieving their goals. The concept is also applicable to other sectors where people need to become experts quickly, avoiding trial and error.
Stuart Mackey & Gary Gallagher: PaperBag and Helen Jackson: University of Ulster
The Paperbag team have recently completed phase one of a research project for the Centre of Media Research at the University of Ulster - an iPhone application that links digital site-specific historical information and augmented reality overlays to the referenced physical world of the Titanic Quarter in Belfast.
We’ll be hearing from both Paper Bag who were responsible for carrying out the technical feasibility and development of the application and Helen Jackson the concept and design lead from the University of Ulster.
Lyra McKee: CEO and Co-Founder, NewsRupt
NewsRupt is a media start-up based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It builds awesome web applications and software for the global media industry, with a focus on journalists and news organizations.
Its products have been tipped as ‘game-changers’ for the industry and the first one (currently a secret!) will be launching at SHOWCASE.
Simon Hamilton: Chief Rumblr & Steven Hylands Chief Doodlr, Rumble Labs
Rumble Labs create web-based applications to improve the design process in unique, open and collaborative ways. At SHOWCASE they will be demoing their debut app (Onotate) aimed at the global creative industry.
Onotate allows designers to present their concepts to team members or clients, for feedback and approval. It is a company and project centric application, whereby users can add inline annotations & moods to help them express their opinion in relation to specific design elements.
Anton Hutton: Founder, EyeSpyFX
EyeSpyFX make mobile applications for webcams, allowing users to view, move and experience their cameras on iPhone, Blackberry or Android-based device. They’re also one of the few NI firms generating real revenues through the app stores. The next stage might well mean taking to the cloud - with an innovative new concept and ridiculously disruptive pricing model to boot.
John Reid & Stuart Manning: Co-founders, Exise
Exise produce web applications that help businesses connect with their customers in a meaningful way via online social networks like Facebook and Twitter.
At Showcase they will be demonstrating the current Beta version of Exiseco which has been built to allow multiple users to manage many accounts in an easy to use format, features include: proactive alerting, data mining, statistical reporting, location based searching, and campaign management.
Alan Anderson & Ian Sayers: Boomio
Boomio Portfolios allows members to upload their work, from free, to display it to potential clients. Aimed at freelance artists, graphic designers and other creative’s across the UK, Boomio also offers a fully-searchable directory of creative talent across the country, ensuring that companies or businesses looking for creative freelancers have an easy, one-site portal to find the best person for their projects.
Of course, there are many sites out there that already provide a similar service. Where Boomio might differ lies with the tie in with Creative Boom. Through our ties to the online magazine and all its regional Hubs – and there are currently 25 throughout the UK generating over 1,000,000 views a month – each providing editorial, marketing and press support to each regional boomio sites.
Chris Johnson: Freelance Developer
Having spent a year living and working in Germany Chris has returned to NI with a totally new mindset and new skills. At SHOWCASE Chris will be demoing an exciting new mobile application for the conference and events market. And if all goes well, attendees with iPhone 3G, 3Gs and 4 will be the first to see it in action.
Craig Lloyd: Founder & Courier, Cycle Send It
Cycle Send It provides express local delivery that doesn’t cost the earth. Operating for the past year as Belfast’s only bicycle courier service has provided the opportunity to rethink how deliveries are booked and fulfilled. The result is that they have developed a state of the art order management system using a combination of mobile, location and open source technologies that will be demonstrated at Showcase.
Liam Walsh: Monscierge
Monscierge™ is a user friendly, forty-seven-inch hotel touch screen - and looks a little like a 7 ft iPhone. Alaredy in use at select hotels in Dublin and Belfast the application highlight hotel events and amenities as well as local dining, nightlife, cultural events, shopping, directions, weather and flight information. The aim is to install over 2000 units across Europe and the front-end design work is all being created in Derry.
Adrian Avendano and Ellen Dudley: Crowd Scanner
Crowd Scanner allows anyone to create a quick poll question on their phone and then let others have their say by physically passing the phone around the room - effortlessly combining tech with social interaction and hopefully sparking off ‘conversations over questions … serendipitously’.
The Galway duo behind the app reached the final 8 in the TechCrunch Summer Pitch Battle in July and were selected to present at App Circus in San Francisco - and now they’re coming to SHOWCASE.
